EXTENSION
The three pictures shown below were drawn by children - Laura, aged 5; Claire, aged 6; Elisabeth, aged 8. Which girl do you think drew which picture? Give your reasons.
ACTIVITY
Find some different types of drawing, colouring and puzzle books available for children of different ages. In what ways do they help children to learn about colour and shape? Use this information and a graphics program to design an outline drawing for children to colour in. Print several copies, or make a few designs which can be made into a colouring book.
CHILD STUDY
If the child is old enough, encourage him or her to draw a picture, but without saying what to draw or showing how to do it. When the picture is finished, ask the child to tell you about it. Have you learnt anything about the child's imagination or feelings?
Repeat this exercise every few weeks. Make a collection of the drawings and compare them.
